The Carp Connection
I took my girls fishing to a local pond and we were fishing with nightcrawler
pieces… hoping to get some sunfish or catfish. The fish were jumping everywhere…
completely out of the water. I wasn’t sure what they were, but was guessing
carp. We each had a line out and the first thing that I caught was a snapping
turtle. That was a first for me. We all got a laugh out of that catch. I didn’t
have to unhook him, he snapped the line when I got him to shore and slunk back
into the murky depths from hence he came….
The
next fish to be caught was me as well… I caught a small, largemouth bass. As I
was bringing him in, my oldest was yelling that she had a fish on. She brought
in a carp, about 11 or 12 inches long. This was her first carp ever and she was
excited! As she was bringing her fish up on shore to have me take a picture, my
youngest daughter starts yelling that she too has a fish on. And she lands her
first ever carp, which was about 10 inches long. We took quite a few pictures
and then let them all go. There was an electrical storm almost on top of us and
we had to pack up and leave, but what a way to end the fishing day!
I
have always heard that Carp can be caught on kernels of corn, but I just had a
hard time with that, until the next day. The next day was beautiful, so I took
some corn to the pond while the girls were in school, just to experiment. I was
amazed that I was catching carp on corn. I had size 6 circle hooks, no sinker, a
bobber, and would totally cover the hook in corn. Talk about peaceful.
Man it feels great to be fishing again!
